Casino Gaming and Hours
Slot machines operate Sunday–Thursday 11 a.m.–2 a.m., and Friday & Saturday 11 a.m.–3 a.m. Classical Gaming Roulette runs Sunday–Thursday 3 p.m.–2 a.m. and Friday & Saturday 3 p.m.–3 a.m., while Blackjack and Ultimate Texas Hold’em open on weekdays from 5 p.m. Smoking and non-smoking areas split the floor, so blackjack, roulette, and poker machines are available in both areas. There’s a walk-up bar in the smoking zone, while ATMs stay near the main cash desk.
The resort operates under a licence from the Eastern Cape Gambling Board. Over R1.2 billion was paid out between early 2017 and 2021, reaching more than 58,000 guests. The numbers are large, yet the core point is steady guest flow through Port Edward.
For the best experience, always check the latest information or contact staff for current schedules and amenities.
Location and Directions
Nestled between the Umtamvuna and Mzamba rivers, the resort stretches over 750 hectares and sits about 5 km south of Port Edward - near the KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape border. If you’re flying in, the drive from King Shaka International in Durban takes less than two hours. From Durban, stick to the N2 highway, or use Main Bizana Road if you know it.
The resort has direct beach access. The beach is outside, and the casino is inside - Sun International’s only beach resort on the unspoiled coastline between KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.
Rooms and Bookings
The resort offers 146 rooms. Reservations go through [email protected] or call us at +27 39 305 9111. Room rates include access to casino facilities, the water park, the 18-hole golf course, and the beach.
Sun MVG members earn points for both gaming and stays. Points transfer across all Sun International properties, so if you’ve earned rewards elsewhere, you can use them here too.
Wild Waves Water Park
This was part of the renovation between 2010 and 2012, an R80 million upgrade at the time. The rides and equipment come from WhiteWater West (Canada). It’s aimed at families but still offers some thrills.
A few highlights include:
- Aqua loop body slide
- Speed slides for racing
- Lazy loop for relaxed floating
- Family rafts you can share with kids
- Smaller areas for little ones
Hotel guests get access as part of the deal. Day passes go on sale for visitors. We shift opening times through the year, so during school holidays or summer, hours run longer.
Golf and Outdoor Activities
The 18-hole golf course is rated among the top in Southern Africa, using natural bush and coastal curves for its layout. To book, just phone the main number. No clubs? You can rent gear here.
For deep sea fishing and scuba diving, we do not manage those directly, but local operators are easy to reach and ready to assist. The coastline supports it well.
| Activity | Access Method | Notes |

Our History and How We Grew
The casino opened on 18 October 1981; build cost reported as R25 million. Back then, we were number six in the country’s list of casinos. Just three from that early group still exist, and we are proud to still be open.
Sol Kerzner built us after a 1979 land-lease was arranged. The location inside the old Transkei homeland meant we could operate during apartheid, when other areas couldn’t run licensed gambling. Durban residents would travel in for legal games, turning us into a go-to casino for those weekends.
A major renovation from 2010 to 2012 brought in Wild Waves and gave new life to the whole place. Sun International still owns the resort, holding a significant share of the country’s casino market with multiple properties.

Community Role and Employment
We’re one of the bigger employers in Port Edward, and our long-term licence keeps jobs secure in gaming, hospitality, and facility teams.
In 2018, land restitution meant locals became shareholders - uMgungundlovu claimants own 28.4% as shareholders since 2018 land restitution. We lease land paying R4 million per year to Mzamba Community Property Association, 6% yearly increase. A total of R23 million compensation went to 117 families, with R27 million put into new tourism projects as part of the agreement.
Planning a family trip? Book early for December or January, especially for school holidays. Certain rooms fill up fast. Day guests can use the water park and eat in our restaurants without staying, and the casino floor is open for walk-ins.
